Checking out tvOS’ 9.1.1’s restored Podcasts app

Today Apple released tvOS 9.1.1, a minor update for the fourth-generation Apple TV that introduces a new version of the company's Podcasts app. A version of the Podcasts app was available on the third-generation Apple TV, but the only way to get them on the fourth-generation model was to AirPlay them from your phone or tablet.

The app is straightforward; a phone app stretched out and rearranged to follow the standard Apple TV design guidelines. It's laid out in five "tabs," two of which are dedicated to the shows you've subscribed to. The Featured and Top Charts tabs focus on discoverability, offering up popular and Apple-curated podcasts to people looking for something new and the Search tab does what you'd expect.

tvOS' next major update will be version 9.2, which will add Bluetooth keyboard support, folders for apps, a new multitasking switcher, and a handful of other enhancements. So far all of the platform's updates have either focused on fixing bugs or adding features from iOS or the old Apple TV software rather than making major changes—presumably that will come with some kind of tvOS 10 update released alongside the next version of iOS later this year. Expect the final version of tvOS 9.2 to be released alongside iOS 9.3 and OS X 10.11.4.
